Emerald Recycling Wins Nucor Steel Recycling Solutions Award

Nucor Steel Award

Seattle, Wash. - Emerald Recycling, Inc. received the coveted Nucor Steel Recycling Solutions Award at the annual Washington State Recycling Association recycler of the year ceremony on May 6. "Nucor Steel Seattle Inc. is proud to present this award every year," said Bart Kale, safety and environmental manager, Nucor. "To us, this award represents a level of excellence given to those companies who go beyond collecting and sorting recyclables to actually innovating and investing in ways to manufacture new products from materials that would otherwise be disposed of. We congratulate Emerald Recycling for earning this award."

This recognition marks the ongoing accomplishments of this family owned company with roots going back more than 75 years as pioneers in the recycling, reuse and recovery field. Emerald's Tacoma facility annually processes over 20 million gallons of oils, solvents and other industrial fluids. By recovering the value of waste by-products in one commercial sector, Emerald creates sustainable products for another sector.

Waste by-products are collected and then processed via distillation technology at Emerald. Automotive oils are processed and re-refined into a low sulfur emissions fuel for the marine industry while waste anti-freeze and industrial solvents are distilled into other quality grade "green" products. By collecting, processing and returning materials to local markets, Emerald has created a closed loop for petroleum-based waste materials from industrial service sectors, retail businesses, and government operations.

Creating and marketing high volumes of recycled "green" products offers significant environmental and economic benefits, allowing a large portion of our local organic waste to be continuously reused within a local, sustainable system that minimizes the dependence on virgin petroleum while also lowering our region’s carbon footprint and expanding commerce and jobs.

"Emerald is proud to be recognized by Nucor Steel and the Washington State Recycling Association," said Steve Banchero, chief executive officer for the Emerald Services companies. "Since our family started in the recycling business in the 1930s, our ongoing focus has been to invest in the technology to complete the local recycling loop and to operate as a true green manufacturer. This type of recognition means everything to the company and all of our employees."
